Dump The Pump Day A Success!

APTA’s fourth annual National “Dump the Pump” Day, June 18, was a great success as 77 public transit systems around the nation, including Paducah Area Transit System, held events to spread the message of how using public transportation instead of driving helps people save money. Also participating were six state public transportation associations.

“With gas prices increasing 33 percent since December, coupled with uncertain economic times, people have been looking for ways to save, and riding public transportation is a great choice to make,” said APTA President William Millar. Some public transit systems offered free or reduced rides. Others held contests and gave away free transit passes, while still others placed ads at gas stations or content on YouTube, Facebook, and MySpace. You can follow PATS on Twitter at http://twitter.com/Paducah_Transit

A variety of broadcast and print media featured the event, and many APTA members reported that their ridership showed an increase as a result of the publicity. Dump the Pump helps APTA remind the public as well as legislators of the main benefits of public transportation: economic savings, energy independence, and environmental benefits, which combine to produce a better quality of life for all Americans.

Dump The Pump, Thursday, June 18th

As America’s economic challenges continue, Paducah Area Transit System announced today that it will join with other public transportation systems nationwide to participate in the fourth annual National Dump the Pump Day on June 18. Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the 2009 National Dump the Pump Day is a day that encourages people to ride public transportation to save money, protect the environment, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and improve our quality of life.

“America is facing a number of significant economic challenges right now,” said PATS Executive Director Kim Adair. “People who use public transportation are helping answer those challenges for themselves and for their country. That’s why we’re asking people to join us and dump the pump on June 18.”

FREE RIDES ON ALL PATS FIXED ROUTE BUSES, Thursday, June 18th! Extra PATS personnel will be riding along to help answer questions for passengers. Check www.paducahtransit.com for maps and schedules!

Individuals can achieve an average annual savings of over $8,000 by taking public transportation instead of driving and by living with one less car. And for every $1 invested in public transportation infrastructure, $6 is generated in economic returns to communities.

“Public transportation also has an important role to play in the energy and environmental debate,” said Adair. “If you leave your car behind to take public transportation, you will be helping to reduce America’s dependence on foreign energy and combat climate change."

Public transportation saves 900,000 automobile fill-ups each day – 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline per year. And switching to public transportation can reduce individual carbon emissions by 20 pounds per day or 4,800 pounds per year.

“By participating in Dump the Pump Day, we hope people who have never used PATS will decide to give us a try instead of driving their car,” said Adair. “We’ll be welcoming new riders and thanking our regular riders with special services and benefits on National Dump the Pump Day.

Senator Mitch McConnell Visits PATS!

(PADUCAH, KY) Senator Mitch McConnell visited Paducah Area Transit System (PATS) this morning for a special ceremony, during which he presented PATS with a check for $2.3 million dollars, which includes $1.9 million procured by Senator McConnell.
Senator McConnell praised Paducah Area Transit System for it’s work, and local leadership in Paducah and McCracken County for the way it presents a united effort in identifying needs and applying for federal funds, and then making efficient use of the funding it receives.

Kentucky's senior senator and Senate Minority Leader remarked, "Why do we do it? We do it because it helps low-income people. We do it because it's good for the environment, and the federal government has traditionally provided some assistance and I've tried to divert a significant amount of that to PATS over the years because I think they do a wonderful job."

"The support Paducah Transit Authority has received from Senator McConnell over the years has been greatly appreciated," remarked PATS Executive Director Kim Adair. "His continued support to Paducah Transit Authority has allowed us to enhance our service to the community."

"The current funding he has secured for Paducah Transit Authority will be used for covered vehicle parking on the property across the street, hybrid buses, hybrid long-distance vehicles, solar bus shelters with solar signs, office computers, maintenance equipment and remodeling." Adair added, "Senator McConnell is a great friend to public transit and Western Kentucky and we are honored to have him as our Senator."

Paducah Mayor Bill Paxton praised Senator McConnell for his support of PATS and Western Kentucky, remarking because of Senator McConnell, Paducah has the best transit of any city its size. McCracken County Judge Executive Van Newberry even rode the PATS Downtown Trolley over to the presentation, and observed that the importance of public transportation to our citizens and our environment is the reason the McCracken County Fiscal Court has increased its financial support of PATS in the past year.
